Visiting Iwakuni is another of my favorite day trips from Hiroshima. Once you are done visiting Takehara, head to Okunoshima Island. You can continue on the trail up to the remaining key sights of Sarutobi, Nidandaki, and Sandandaki, or head back to the bus stop. The Iwaso Hotel occupies a traditional wooden building as well as some cottages dating back to 1900. It is situated no  more than a 5-minute walk from Itsukushima Shrine and from the Giant Floating Torii. Next, take the ropeway to catch the magnificent views of the island.
From the 12th century, the village was rather prosperous and was economically attached to a Zen Buddhist temple called Mitaki-Ji. This new prosperity was partly caused by the increase of trade with the rest of Japan under the auspices of the Taira clan. Hiroshima was founded in 1589 as a castle town on the Ōta River delta. Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Hiroshima rapidly transformed into a major urban center and industrial hub. The city was a center of military activities during the imperial era, playing significant roles such as in the First Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War, and the two world wars. For the prefecture with the same name where this city is located, see Hiroshima Prefecture.

There is a lot to do in Onomichi, from viewing ancient and exquisite temples to relaxing on the beach, to checking out museums and yes, rest at the Senkoji Park with a lot of cats. The island has some of the best hot springs and awesome beaches for you to relax and take in the authentic Japanese town that is full of heart and charm. It is recommended that you visit the place early in the morning right after it opens before it gets crowded; that is when you experience the most peaceful, serene, and calm environment it is known for. This shrine should be at the top of your list for places to visit in Hiroshima, hands down. The atomic blast destroyed the original castle in 1945, so the one that stands today is relatively newer but just as exquisite as the previous original one.

Following the atomic bombing in 1945, the population dropped to 137,197. By 1955, the city's population had returned to pre-war levels. It has Western-style rooms in the Museum,  Oval, Park, and Beach buildings.
