Coincidentally, Joyce Evans established a photography gallery in Melbourne in the late 1970s at the same time as Jim Alexander was turning his home into a women’s gallery in the city. “He was only active with his gallery for a relatively short period of time but had such a profound impact on a lot of these female artists and their careers, and there’s so little information about him. “It’s kind of an ironic story because a lot of this sale is about underappreciated women artists, but I find Jim is a very much underappreciated male gallery owner who supported women artists,” Fuller says. The now-famous Australian artist Grace Crowley (highest price at auction, $36,800) assisted Jim Alexander with his first exhibition when his gallery was called Important Women Artists. It was later known as Jim Alexander Gallery, when it also showed some men.
Ngayartu Kujarra was painted using a mixture of rose, peach, pink, sage, white, blue and gold acrylic paints. Along the border of the canvas are twenty-nine vivid cobalt blue circles, each labelled with the name of a sacred waterhole in the East Pilbara region. The centre is rendered with an expansive wash of white paint, the artists’ unique way of depicting the central subject matter Ngayartu Kujarra – an immense salt lake known to many as Lake Dora. It is a vast, collaborative work made by twelve women across three generations from Martumili, in Western Australia.
