And this temple is the perfect chance for you to take that break. It’s a quiet, contemplative escape from the streets with lanterns and moss-covered statues. In fact, walking into this temple is a lot like stepping back to a simpler time. Information on Osaka’s charms can be a little harder to find than it is for the larger cities, which is why some travelers don’t make it part of their trip to Japan. Dating as far back as the 16th century, Osaka Castle has had its share of history. It has seen the rise and fall of warriors, survived the Second World War, and was even struck by lightning only to be restored later on.
As of 2023, unlike several other countries, Japan does not have a plan to phase out coal. In 1950, coal supplied half of Japan's energy needs, hydroelectricity one-third, and oil the rest. By 2001, the contribution of oil had increased to 50.2% of the total, with rises  also in the use of nuclear power and natural gas. Japan now depends heavily on imported fossil fuels to meet its energy demand. One result of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster could be renewed public support for the commercialization of renewable energy technologies.

Onsen towns such as Kinosaki Onsen or Arima Onsen are all about relaxation and leisure. It might sound like an odd suggestion to leave Osaka, but the city is less than two hours from Hiroshima, where an atomic bomb was dropped in the summer of 1945. Hear the stories of that fateful day – and what happened in the aftermath – on a tour with a local guide who can take you to pay your respects at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. There’s a poignant stone memorial to the thousands of people who lost their lives and you can visit the eerie structure of the Genbaku Dome which stands almost exactly as it did after the bombing. The museum, a collection of artifacts from the day and testimonies of those who lived through the events, is well worth a visit.
Historically a theater district, it is now a popular nightlife and entertainment area characterized by its eccentric atmosphere and large illuminated signboards. Furthermore, within the ryokan, guests can enjoy complimentary services such as gelato after bathing, as well as activities like karaoke and table tennis. There is also a complimentary shuttle service from Kaga Onsen Station. Kaga Onsen is a cluster of hot spring towns near Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture.
It takes up three terraces on the 16th, 17th, and 18th floors of the South Gate Building. Tenku no Noen , where fresh fruits and vegetables are grown, is located on the south side. Opened on May 4, 2011, JR Osaka Station has been renovated, with the north and south buildings now being connected to create one of the largest commercial complexes in western Japan. At the Q's Stage on the first floor of the West Wing, live events featuring famous celebrities have been held. Q'sPARK, a free playground for children in Abeno Q's Mall, also hosts events for the local community. Abeno Q's Mall is home to SHIBUYA 109 Abeno, which has about 30 stores selling women's wear, accessories, shoes, and other items.

Initially on good terms with the city’s mayor, Hiramatsu Kunio, Hashimoto proposed the merger of prefectural and municipal water management systems, pointing out the wastefulness of running purification plants in close vicinity. The mayor first agreed to the merger, but negotiations stumbled over management policy and triggered a spiteful conflict between the two sides. Hashimoto’s next proposal was to abolish the city of Osaka altogether in his Osaka metropolis plan. A new political party, Osaka Ishin no Kai , was launched to pave the way. Osaka may be known as a concrete jungle, but it has many beautiful and easily accessible parks, plus a river and canals running through it. “The canals running through the city create a gritty yet beautiful character,” says Tim Fieldes, who works at a Japanese houseware brand and moonlights as a DJ.
The “Chaya” part means teahouse, and that is exactly the concept of the spacious house that can accommodate up to 10 people. Its fusion of modern and traditional aesthetic features a lot of wooden décor and warm tones, warming you up before you even hit the bath. If you’re worried about privacy, as well as the kashikiri option, a lot of ryokan and onsen hotels also offer rooms with their own private baths, too.

If you don’t know, you don’t know, but, honestly, these things are awesome. They’re basically shopping streets and they’re pretty dang retro. If you’re lucky, you might catch some people doing a spot of kooky cosplay photography on the grounds. They are typically more economical than nightly rates at hotels and can give a homey, settled vibe, which is perfect when adapting to a new country. Knowing how to rent a house or apartment in Japan is not difficult as long as you are prepared. Depending on the landlord and where you choose to live, foreign nationals and Japanese citizens are not treated too differently when renting a place.

Before heading to Hozenji Yokocho’s 60 bars and restaurants, at the heart of Dotonbori, pause to make an offering to Fudo Myo-o, a Buddhist spirit that represents discipline and firm moral character. So many people have thrown water on Fudo Myo-o that now a layer of green moss covers his grumpy face. Don’t let the slightly dull name put you off — this excellent museum in the 1970 Expo Park is perhaps the best in Osaka and certainly its most ambitious. Known locally as Minpaku, it’s an active research centre and is Japan’s third largest when it comes to the humanities.
Of course there are sites with sakura in Osaka, but few would pretend the setting is as picture perfect as it is in neighbouring Kyoto, the home of hanami . Demand for hotels in the old capital can reach obscene levels each April and can require months of advanced booking. There’s better value — and more fun — to be had by staying in Osaka and making Kyoto a day trip. The good news is that thanks to the ruthless efficiency of the shinkansen , Kyoto Station is only 13 minutes from Shin-Osaka Station. It’s impossible to imagine the world of photography without Japanese input.
